Spring cleaning: this time of year, it’s a popular idea, and for good reason! The weather is at least a bit warmer and we’re ready for all the activities that spring and summer bring. As a result, we’re ready to pick up the slack on our chores and to examine how to clean the whole house.
Here are some pointers as you get started with this year’s spring cleaning.
1. Make a plan
When there is so much to do this time of year, some of us tend to just want to get started. But if you create a plan for what you want to accomplish, you can batch tasks and save a lot of time. Just because certain areas of the home look clean, doesn’t actually mean they are as clean as you may think.
Take for example the air: generally speaking, it looks the same but there may be air pollutants and pollen as well as other allergy-inducing particles in the air, in quantities that are high, but still undetectable by the eye. Spring cleaning is the perfect time for us to thoroughly clean the home to get rid of many of these contaminants.
When creating your to-do list, you can even involve the family so that no task is forgotten. It will also give kids “ownership” of the work so they know all the work that goes into spring cleaning.
Your to-do list may involve some of the following:
- Vacuum every room
- Dust all furniture
- Shampoo/professionally clean carpets
- Throw away old clothes
- Dust blinds
- Dust celling fans
- Sanitize areas including waste baskets
- Wash windowsills
- Change your air filters
- Clean your showers and make sure mold isn’t building up
- Get your spring tune-up
- Throw away properly dispose of old medicines
- Clean fridge
- Clean oven
- Clean out your pantry
2. Gather the team
As you start to create your plan and your checklist, gather the team that will be involved. Even the little ones can help in small ways, so start to create the positive habits now in your family that can last a lifetime.
To really cut down and get rid of clutter, make sure, when possible, each child can help out and clean their own room. While spring cleaning is a great way to do a deep cleaning, air quality in the home is usually a matter of ongoing cleaning and air purification over time. Thankfully, we have our HVAC to help us do that on a daily basis, but it also helps to do clean and do smaller tasks routinely, too.
3. Don’t try to do it all at once
Keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to clean the whole house in one day or all at once. One day could be possible if you’ve done it before and you start early, but give yourself a bit of time to do all that’s needed. Consider working room to room in the home, or by grouping tasks together to save time. For example, if you were to group tasks together you might do all the vacuuming throughout the house at once, and then move to the next chore on the list.
4. Hire experts
Many people do a majority of spring cleaning themselves or as a family, and then they bring in an expert to do the rest. That’s a safe way to make sure you protect you and your family. Whether it be cleaning out the gutters, cleaning windows or doing your heating and cooling system tune-up, leave the professional tasks to…the professionals!
Recall when you have your heating and system checked during your spring tune-up, we can make sure the thermostat is working as it should be, and we can recalibrate the system as needed. We also make sure everything is working safely and we make adjustments to ensure your system is as effective and efficient as possible. It’s just one more reason to make sure your getting in your regular maintenance.
If you decide to hire cleaners for specific cleaning tasks in your home, make sure they can provide references or have reviews and make sure they are experienced.
