You’ll want to relax inside comfortably this summer, no doubt.
Here are simple steps to make sure your AC is in proper working condition for these next few months and beyond.
The Hottest Month Is Just Around the Corner
Did you know July, which is quickly approaching, is the warmest month out of the entire year in Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky? (1.) To ensure you don’t get stuck during this hot summer month relying on box fans, take these simple steps to keep your AC working as efficiently and effectively as possible.
1. Plan for Regular System Tune-Ups (Twice a Year)
Just like your car, your cooling system requires regular maintenance to run properly. Although there are many ways to keep an eye on your AC unit yourself, we can provide you with a more comprehensive, thorough check-up. (2)
With our maintenance program, spring and fall tune-ups can help ensure a long life for your system. During an air conditioning maintenance, we inspect the entire system, checking all electrical connections, lubricating the blower fan motor bearings, checking the filters in and outside of your air conditioner, checking the condensate line and drain, testing the compressor and cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils, and more. If you need to, put it on your calendar so you don’t forget or have us give you a reminder call.
2. Keep an Eye on Your Thermostat
When you change your thermostat setting to “cool,” your AC system should boot up within a minute or two. If it doesn’t, this indicates that you may need to have your cooling unit repaired or replaced (3). If you notice you’re constantly having to change or adjust the thermostat, it could also indicate there’s a deeper issue that may or may not be thermostat-related
3. Seal Open Spaces
Did you know that on average, families spend as much as one third of all their heating and cooling spend on air that leaks out of the home? It’s easier than you think for the cool air to escape your home—but much of that is preventable! (6)
Double check that all windows, doors, and other passageways are completely sealed and shut You’ll save energy and keep cool by taking this step. It might require new windows (with two panes of glass for greater insulation), weather-stripping, caulking ,or adding plastic, but it will be worth the investment. Also, for those that have an attic, it’s one of the most common places to lose air unintentionally, so look there for more opportunities to increase your system efficiency (2, 6)
4. Check Your Refrigerant
Without refrigerant, your AC unit can’t function. (It’s the liquid cooling agent that makes air conditioning possible by absorbing heat from the air in your home (4). The amount of refrigerant, whether it be too much or too little, can negatively affect the capability of your unit. (5)
5. Make Sure Filters & Collection Cells Are Clean & Clear
When the charging port on your phone is dirty or clogged, it sometimes hinders the phone’s ability to charge properly. Similar to your phone’s charging port, your cooling system’s filter can have issues if it’s clogged.
More specifically, if it’s clogged or dirty, this forces the system to do extra work in order to move air. This not only wastes energy, but it also cuts the life span of your AC unit, too (5).
