Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV)

All modern homes should have sufficient ventilation to meet federal guidelines, but when your heating or cooling system is running constantly for days at a time, it is tempting not to use those fans. Blowing cooled or heated air out of your home can cost you money and greatly reduce the efficiency and lifespan of your HVAC system. That is why an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) is such an effective, money–saving upgrade for your home’s HVAC system.

What Is an Energy Recovery Ventilator?

As its name implies, an energy recovery ventilator recovers energy that would be otherwise lost in the ventilation process. It does this in two ways.

First, when air is vented out of your home, it passes through the ERV’s heat exchanger. The heat exchanger moves heat from one environment to the other. So if it is 25 degrees outside, the ERV will extract heat from inside your home and transfer it to new air coming in from outdoors. This way, you can get fresh air without having to reheat that air. The same process works in reverse to retain cooling in your home when your air conditioner is on.

The second function of an ERV is to maintain the humidity level in your home. Because you work so hard to maintain a steady humidity level that keeps your family comfortable and healthy, it is frustrating when fresh air carries in the humid air you came inside to avoid. An ERV transfers humidity between indoor and outdoor air the same as the heat exchanger does heat.

Installation and Maintenance of a Energy Recovery Ventilator

After selecting an energy recovery ventilator that matches your needs, one of our technicians will install it for you and test to make sure it effectively retains the comfort level of your home.

These systems are simple to install and require minimal maintenance, though it is recommended that you have yours inspected at least once a year when standard HVAC maintenance is performed (either in the spring with your air conditioner or the fall with your heating system).
