Tap into Sustainable Fuel with a Geothermal System

Technology has evolved rapidly in recent years for geothermal heating systems to be an increasingly popular way to take advantage of renewable, sustainable fuel to heat and cool any home or business.

If it is time for a new HVAC system for your building or if you are worried that your current system’s cost will only continue to increase as fuel prices rise, call Greater Comfort Heating & Air Conditioning.

What is a Geothermal System & How Does it Efficiently Heat & Cool My Home/Business?

A geothermal system is a heating and cooling system that uses the energy absorbed by the earth each day to heat and cool your building. The concept is the same as a heat pump, which extracts heat from the air outside your home. Instead of extracting heat from the air, however, a geothermal system uses a series of pipes filled with water or refrigerant to extract heat from the ground. Because it uses no fuel, it is very energy efficient, and because it extracts heat from the ground and not the air outside, it is more effective than a traditional heat pump in below–freezing temperatures.

Geothermal System Installation

The ground temperature six feet below surface is a steady 68–72 degrees most of the time, so the pipes carrying water or refrigerant for your HVAC system must be buried at least that deep. For particularly large buildings or for colder areas, the pipes might be buried deeper in a vertical configuration to ensure they provide enough heat energy.

In areas with a high water table, an open loop may be used to extract water from an underground pond or water source and use it for the heating process – that water is then circulated back underground when done. This is sometimes called "pump and dump" looping.
